our most 
important customers faced the biggest crisis in modern times.

The COVID situation has been dire for our merchants. 
Many have had big cashflow issues threatening them to go bankrupt. 
And with next to no footfall, the sitution looked bleak.It doesn’t matter if we provide small businesses with great tools to succeed if consumers can’t shop.We were tasked to come up with a concept to help small businesses adapt.
 Something ownable that the team could build quickly.And that is how the Forever Local platform idea came about .&#38;nbsp;*&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;*&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;*
We created a free website to connect local businesses with the communities they operate in. 
Somewhere people can discover who’s open and who’s delivering nearby.Businesses were able showcase their best selling products, promote their

latest 
offers, 
add a personalised greeting and tell us if they accept gift cards.


The platform was promoted heavily across our own channels 
– on social, by email, PR and using nudge banners in the app back-office. 
While our sales and support teams worked tirelessly 
to encourage merchants to sign up andcreate a profile.&#38;nbsp;

However, the Scottish National Team had yet again failed to qualify. Could this be an unlikely opportunity to change the fortunes of Scottish football forever?As football diehards, the Tartan Army have grown tired of the ‘what ifs’ as we mess up qualification after qualification. But what if we were to suggest something so ridiculous it might actually work? What if we were to encourage Brazilians to come to Scotland to have our babies and make us magic at football? And so ‘Bruzil. The Road to 2034’ was born...

We kicked off the campaign with an appeal to the good people of Brazil.

For the duration of the World Cup we launched a promotional can that ditched IRN-BRU’s orange and blue design 
for a more Brazilian look. We also gave away some 2034 team kit in The Sun.

Films documenting each stage of the ‘process’ were then released online.


IRN-BRU loved the idea so much, they commissioned us to write a TV script for broadcast during the knockout stages.


All content was hosted on a bespoke Bruzil section of the IRN-BRU website. 
The site housed the launch activity, a Bruzil blog during the tournament and a Bruzilian baby name generator.

We gave away a Campaign Handbook in the News of the World. 

This included a Scots/Brazilian Phrasebook, a ‘Baby’s first’ chart and how to make a romantic Feijoada Supper recipe.

Bruzil received scores of press coverage and The Scottish Sun even sent a reporter to Brazil to cover the story from a South American perspective.

Early campaign results

In the 5 weeks the campaign ran there were 300,280 unique views of Bruzil content on the IRN-BRU website.

There were a further 70,550 views of official content on YouTube. And 8,971 times on facebook.

36,745 people generated 713,078 Bruzilian baby names.

Coke spent £3.4 million on their World Cup Campaign. IRN-BRU spent £150,000.

IRN-BRU was named as one of Marketing Week’s top five World Cup Campaigns. Coke was not.

And 5.1 million Big Match cans flew off the shelves in the 8 weeks around the World Cup.credits

Being a bit of an ice hockey fanboy, I took an active role designing the team kits for the film. Working with our Senior Designer Amy Fry, we created bespoke jerseys for both the home and away players.

‘Team Talk’ online idea:

We asked fans to record their own inspirational team talks to help boost the confidence of Malkin and the Russian team during the tournament. 

The best ones were be broadcast to the team in the locker room just before they stepped out on to the ice.

Every year, cocaine use in Scotland is becoming more and more widespread. 
To help tackle the problem, the Scottish Government briefed us to warn young people considering taking the drug about the potential side effects.
We decided to play on the insight that taking cocaine is like taking a gamble. You just don’t know what you’re getting in that little bag. You might enjoy yourself one time, but it’s just as likely that you’re going to cause yourself serious damage.

In our cinema spot, we set out to really unsettle our audience. Using an unnerving soundscape and editing style, we brought the gamble to life as a creepy character deals out the terrible syptoms to the unsuspecting users.


These posters appeared in cinema foyers and pub toilets across the country.

This is, in part, due to the stigma attached to talking about your thoughts and feelings. Northern Ireland has some of the highest rates of male depression and suicide in Europe. The Northern Irish Government’s Health Promotion Agency asked us to develop some ideas to encourage young men to take the first step and talk to someone.

The TV and Cinema work was accompanied by a targeted 6-sheet poster campaign in city centre shopping precincts, around universities and outside the country’s major sporting venues.
